“Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted” – John Lennon

Hobbies, spare time, guilty pleasures, fixes, whatever you want to call them, we all have them, our spare time killers. These little activities get us through the day by punching a hole in our work week that we make for ourselves or how we mend a rotten day by escaping into them. These personal activities that we jump into can range into almost anything and everything that tickles our fancy. To name a few they could be drawing, talking, blogging, drinking, driving, designing, problem solving, painting, blah, blah, blah the list goes on forever. This hobby is our little escape into our eustress zone out of a potentially dis-stressful day. This eustress balances us and re calibrates our bodies back into normal parameters and maintains that little shred of sanity we have so that we can push through another work day/week/year. Dont get me wrong this is still stress but its voluntary stress. Its the stress that we enjoy even if the outcome of what is causing it is unsuccessful. My favorite example is video games. Why do we play them? It’s simple, we can win at them no matter how hard they are. If someone fails in a video game you can just start over and give it another go with a better knowledge of whats around the next corner that blasted you in the face the last time. If you are still not following me I will water it down even further. Candy fucking Crush. That game has eaten more souls than I care to imagine because people can win at it. Its simple, zero learning curve, and it flashes a lot. Its a game you can play anywhere and almost on any electronic device (tablet, phone, computer) if you have a spare five minutes, which is about all anyone ever has anymore. It also triggers the “Holy shit I’m winning” section in our brain or eustress. Once we win and succeed we want more, so its on to the next level!

So the next time when someone comes up to you while your parked on the couch watching reruns of firefly for the 400th time (guilty) and say you need a hobby. What they are really saying is you need something that triggers your eustress. Not saying Firefly dosent trigger your eustress but you need something else to trigger it as well.

So take 5 minutes and think to yourself. What are your hobbies or what manifests your eustress?

My Eustress triggers:

  1. Video Games
  2. Camping
  3. Good Beer
  4. Drawing
  5. Lego’s AND Mega Bloks (Yes I still build these. Idle hands do work for the devil. Also mega bloks have halo models)
  6. Writing on this thing
  7. Golfing off of Blue Hill into the Susquehanna River (stupid fun)

  1. Great post.

So true, they may seem pointless, but this pointlessness makes all the difference. Gives us the ability to stick to the point during the rest of our lives.

Team Fortress 2 is my guilty pleasure if you want to talk about games.

I actually wrote a ebook about ‘ pointless’ activities and happiness. wwww.boyunderthebridge.com/ebook

    Keep up the writing.
